Chapter 2 She Thought Her Daughter-in-Law Was Lazy—Then She Pulled Back the Blanket

Chapter 2: The Test Beside the Bed

Eleanor Whitcomb stared at the pregnancy test in her trembling hands.
Positive.
For a moment, she forgot how to breathe.
Her eyes darted from the paper back to Lila's pale face.
The young woman looked nothing like the radiant bride who had smiled through yesterday's wedding ceremony. The sparkle was gone from her eyes. The warmth had drained from her skin.
"Lila!" Eleanor cried again, shaking her shoulder gently.
This time, a faint sound escaped Lila's lips.
A weak moan.
Relief washed through Eleanor, but it lasted only seconds.
The blood on the sheets was impossible to ignore.
Years of raising children and helping care for neighbors had taught Eleanor enough to recognize danger when she saw it.
This wasn't normal.
Something was terribly wrong.
She grabbed her phone and dialed emergency services.
"Please hurry," she said, her voice cracking. "My daughter-in-law is pregnant and bleeding heavily. She's barely conscious."
As she waited for help, Eleanor sat beside the bed, holding Lila's cold hand.
Guilt settled heavily on her chest.
Only minutes earlier, she had stormed upstairs furious that Lila was sleeping late.
She had called her lazy.
Disrespectful.
Spoiled.
Now she realized the young woman had likely been suffering alone all night.
The thought made Eleanor sick.
"Lila, stay with me," she whispered.
Lila's eyelids fluttered.
"Eleanor?"
"I'm here."
"The baby..." Lila murmured.
Her voice was barely audible.
"The baby..."
Tears filled Eleanor's eyes.
"We're getting help."
Lila tried to say something else.
But darkness pulled her away again.
Minutes later, sirens echoed outside.
Paramedics rushed upstairs.
One look at the bed and their expressions changed.
Questions came quickly.
How long had she been bleeding?
How far along was the pregnancy?
Had she seen a doctor?
Neither woman knew.
Everything happened so fast.
Lila was loaded onto a stretcher and carried downstairs.
As the ambulance doors closed, Eleanor climbed inside beside her.
She didn't even stop to lock the house.
At the hospital, doctors immediately wheeled Lila into an emergency examination room.
Eleanor paced the waiting area.
Her son, Ethan, answered on the second ring.
"Mom?"
"Ethan, you need to come to Saint Mary's Hospital right now."
Silence.
Then panic.
"What happened?"
"It's Lila."
The fear in her voice said everything.
Forty minutes later, Ethan burst through the emergency room doors.
His suit was wrinkled.
His face was pale.
He looked as frightened as Eleanor had ever seen him.
"Where is she?"
"They're still examining her."
"What happened?"
Eleanor hesitated.
Then she handed him the pregnancy test.
Ethan stared.
His eyes widened.
"What is this?"
"You didn't know?"
He looked genuinely shocked.
"No."
Eleanor's stomach dropped.
"You mean she never told you?"
He slowly shook his head.
For several seconds neither spoke.
A thousand questions filled the silence.
Why hadn't Lila told her husband?
Why was she hiding the pregnancy?
What had happened during the night?
The answers didn't come.
An hour later, a doctor finally appeared.
"Family of Lila Whitcomb?"
Both stood immediately.
The doctor's expression was serious.
"She's stable."
Relief flooded them.
"But she has suffered a miscarriage."
The words struck like lightning.
Ethan staggered backward.
"No."
"I'm very sorry."
Eleanor covered her mouth.
The doctor's voice softened.
"She lost a significant amount of blood. Fortunately, she arrived in time."
Ethan looked completely shattered.
"But she didn't even know..." he whispered.
The doctor frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The pregnancy."
The doctor exchanged a puzzled glance with a nurse.
"According to her medical records, she discovered it approximately six weeks ago."
Ethan stared.
"What?"
The doctor nodded.
"She had a blood test at a private clinic."
A cold feeling spread through Eleanor.
Six weeks.
Lila had known for six weeks.
And never told her husband.
Something wasn't right.
Hours later, Lila finally woke.
The room was dim.
Machines beeped softly.
Ethan sat beside her bed.
His eyes were red from crying.
When Lila saw him, tears immediately rolled down her cheeks.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
Ethan squeezed her hand.
"For what?"
Her voice broke.
"For everything."
The pain in her expression was unbearable.
Ethan leaned forward.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Lila looked away.
Silence.
Then more tears.
"I wanted to."
"Then why didn't you?"
She closed her eyes.
Because the truth was worse than either of them imagined.
Three weeks before the wedding, someone had approached her outside her office.
A woman.
Elegant.
Confident.
Beautiful.
The woman introduced herself with a single sentence.
"My name is Victoria Hayes."
Lila remembered every word.
Victoria had smiled politely.
Then delivered the blow.
"I've been in love with Ethan for years."
Lila's heart had stopped.
Victoria claimed she and Ethan had once shared feelings.
Claimed Ethan was marrying Lila out of obligation.
Claimed he regretted the engagement.
At first, Lila refused to believe her.
Then Victoria showed photographs.
Private photographs.
Pictures of herself and Ethan together.
Laughing.
Traveling.
Holding each other.
Lila had been devastated.
Victoria's final words haunted her.
"If you love him, let him go."
The next day, Lila learned she was pregnant.
Instead of feeling joy, she felt trapped.
Confused.
Terrified.
She wanted to tell Ethan.
But doubt poisoned every thought.
What if he truly loved Victoria?
What if the baby forced him into a marriage he didn't want?
For weeks she kept silent.
Then came the wedding.
She convinced herself everything would be fine.
But on the wedding night, she discovered something even worse.
A message arrived on her phone.
An anonymous number.
Attached was a video.
The moment she opened it, her world collapsed.
The footage appeared to show Ethan kissing Victoria only days before the wedding.
Lila had spent the entire night crying.
Alone.
Terrified.
Heartbroken.
By morning, severe cramps began.
Then the bleeding.
And now the baby was gone.
When she finished telling the story, Ethan sat frozen.
His face had gone white.
"Victoria showed you photographs?"
Lila nodded.
"And a video."
"Show me."
With trembling hands, she unlocked her phone.
Ethan watched carefully.
Then his expression changed.
Not guilt.
Not shame.
Anger.
Pure anger.
"This isn't real."
Lila blinked.
"What?"
"The photographs were edited."
She stared at him.
"The video too."
"How do you know?"
Because he recognized something instantly.
The watch on his wrist.
The background.
The lighting.
Every image had been manipulated.
And there was one undeniable fact.
On the date the video had supposedly been recorded, Ethan had been attending a business conference in another state.
Hundreds of people could verify it.
Someone had deliberately created fake evidence.
Someone wanted to destroy their marriage.
Lila stared at him.
For the first time in weeks, hope flickered inside her.
"You're telling the truth?"
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
"I swear on everything I love."
The room fell silent.
Then a horrifying realization struck both of them.
Victoria hadn't simply lied.
Someone had orchestrated this.
Someone had carefully planned every step.
And because of it, they had lost their child.
Neither of them noticed the figure standing outside the hospital room.
Listening.
Watching.
A woman whose perfectly manicured hand tightened around her purse.
Victoria Hayes.
And when she heard Ethan say he intended to prove the evidence was fake, the smile vanished from her face.
Because if Ethan discovered the truth, he wouldn't just learn who manipulated the photographs.
He would uncover a secret that had been buried for more than twenty years.
May you like
A secret involving his own family.
And Victoria was willing to do anything to keep it hidden.
