CHAPTER 2 She Didn't Run Away — They Made Her Disappear

CHAPTER 2 — The Lies Beneath the Reed Name

Daniel barely remembered leaving the café.

The rain continued falling outside, turning the city into a blur of gray glass and reflections. Emma walked beside him in silence, clutching her thin jacket around herself. Every few steps she glanced over her shoulder, still expecting someone to be following them.

Daniel understood the feeling.

For the first time in his life, he felt as though the ground beneath him was unstable.

His father had lied.

Or at least, someone had.

And the evidence was no longer something he could dismiss.

The hidden letter.

The stranger in the park.

Emma's fear.

Olivia's necklace.

And now those final words.

Don't trust Richard Reed.

His father.

The man who had raised him.

The man whose approval he had spent his entire life trying to earn.

The man who had mourned Olivia's disappearance for fifteen years.

Or pretended to.

By the time they reached Daniel's apartment building, darkness had fallen.

The luxury tower overlooked the river, its glass exterior glowing against the stormy night.

Emma stopped at the entrance.

"I can't go inside."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

"They might know this place."

"Who?"

"The people looking for me."

Daniel glanced around the street.

Nothing seemed unusual.

Just passing cars.

Umbrellas.

Pedestrians hurrying through the rain.

But after everything that had happened, even normal things felt threatening.

"Emma."

She looked up.

"You're not sleeping on the street."

Her expression softened slightly.

"You don't understand."

"Then help me understand."

She hesitated.

Finally she whispered:

"Everyone who helped me before got hurt."

The words lingered between them.

Daniel saw genuine guilt in her eyes.

Not manipulation.

Not performance.

Fear.

Real fear.

He gently opened the door.

"Then let's make sure that doesn't happen again."

For several seconds she stood motionless.

Then she followed him inside.

Later that night, Emma fell asleep on the couch almost immediately.

Daniel covered her with a blanket.

Within minutes she was gone.

Completely exhausted.

As though sleep had been a luxury she rarely allowed herself.

Daniel stood in the dark living room watching her.

Then he walked into his office.

The hidden letter sat on his desk.

He opened it again.

The paper was old now.

Folded.

Yellowed at the edges.

He had read it at least twenty times since finding it.

Yet every sentence seemed more disturbing than before.

Dad,

If you're reading this, then something has gone wrong.

I know they are watching me.

I know what Blackwood is really doing.

I have proof.

Please protect Daniel.

Don't let him become part of this.

And if anything happens to me, remember this:

It wasn't an accident.

Love,

Olivia

Daniel stared at the signature.

His older sister's handwriting.

Undeniably hers.

His hands clenched.

Why had his father hidden it?

Why keep it secret for fifteen years?

Why allow everyone to believe she abandoned them?

Questions multiplied faster than answers.

Finally he opened his laptop.

If Blackwood Foundation existed, there would be records.

Websites.

News articles.

Corporate documents.

Something.

Within seconds dozens of results appeared.

The organization seemed legitimate.

More than legitimate.

Respected.

Powerful.

A global charity involved in humanitarian aid, medical research, education programs, and disaster relief.

Photographs showed smiling volunteers.

Hospitals.

Scholarships.

Fundraising galas attended by politicians and celebrities.

Perfect.

Too perfect.

Daniel scrolled further.

Something caught his attention.

Board of Directors.

His eyes moved down the list.

Then stopped.

His stomach dropped.

One of the names was painfully familiar.

Richard Reed.

His father.

Daniel froze.

For several seconds he simply stared.

Then he checked again.

The name remained.

His father had served on Blackwood's executive board for over twenty years.

Twenty years.

Long before Olivia disappeared.

Long before anyone claimed she ran away.

A cold realization spread through him.

His father hadn't simply known about Blackwood.

He was part of it.

The next morning Daniel woke to the sound of screaming.

He ran into the living room.

Emma sat upright on the couch.

Breathing hard.

Eyes wide.

Terrified.

"It's okay," Daniel said quickly.

She looked around wildly.

Disoriented.

Then reality returned.

Slowly.

Her breathing steadied.

Daniel sat across from her.

"Nightmare?"

Emma laughed weakly.

"Every night."

"What do you see?"

For a moment she said nothing.

Then:

"A hallway."

Daniel listened carefully.

"A very long hallway."

Her hands trembled.

"White walls."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"What happens there?"

Emma swallowed.

"I hear people crying."

A chill moved through him.

"What people?"

"I never see them."

She looked down.

"I only hear them."

The room fell silent.

Daniel wasn't sure why her words unsettled him so much.

Perhaps because she sounded certain.

Not like someone describing a dream.

More like someone remembering.

Then Emma suddenly frowned.

A strange expression crossed her face.

"Wait."

"What?"

She pressed her fingers against her temple.

As if trying to force something into focus.

"I remember a number."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What number?"

"731."

The answer came instantly.

Without hesitation.

Daniel noticed it immediately.

For the first time, she sounded sure.

"731?"

Emma nodded.

"It's important."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"But I've seen it before."

Daniel opened a notebook and wrote it down.

Room 731.

File 731.

Project 731.

It could mean anything.

Yet instinct told him it mattered.

Because memory had given it back.

Three hours later Daniel drove to Reed Industries headquarters.

The skyscraper dominated the downtown skyline.

It had been his second home for years.

Today it felt different.

Foreign.

Hostile.

As he entered the executive floor, employees greeted him politely.

He barely noticed.

His attention was fixed on one office.

His father's.

Richard Reed was already inside.

Standing by the window.

As always.

Looking down at the city he seemed to control.

When Daniel entered, his father smiled.

"You're early."

Daniel closed the door.

The smile faded immediately.

Richard Reed had always been excellent at reading people.

"What happened?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead he placed Olivia's necklace on the desk.

Silence.

His father stared at it.

For the first time in Daniel's life, he saw genuine shock on Richard Reed's face.

The older man went pale.

"Where did you get that?"

Daniel's heartbeat quickened.

"You recognize it."

Richard looked away.

A mistake.

A tiny one.

But Daniel noticed.

"You told everyone Olivia abandoned us."

His father's expression hardened.

"Daniel—"

"You told everyone she disappeared."

"She did."

"Then why did she leave this behind?"

Silence.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Richard sat down slowly.

Years seemed to appear on his face all at once.

"Some truths are complicated."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"That's not an answer."

"No."

His father looked exhausted.

"It's not."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did you lie to me?"

Richard closed his eyes.

For several seconds he said nothing.

Then:

"Yes."

The word struck harder than Daniel expected.

Even though he already suspected it.

Hearing it was different.

Real.

Final.

His father had lied.

For fifteen years.

Daniel's voice became quiet.

"What happened to Olivia?"

Richard opened his eyes.

Pain flashed across them.

Real pain.

Not performance.

Not manipulation.

Something deeper.

"I tried to protect her."

Daniel frowned.

"From what?"

Richard looked toward the window.

Toward the city.

Toward something far away.

"From Blackwood."

The answer stunned him.

Because it was the exact opposite of what he expected.

"You serve on their board."

Richard laughed.

A dark, humorless sound.

"That's exactly why I know what they're capable of."

Daniel's pulse accelerated.

For the first time, fear appeared in his father's eyes.

Not concern.

Fear.

The kind people carry when they've seen terrible things.

"Daniel."

His father stood.

"If Olivia contacted you..."

The sentence stopped.

His expression changed.

Sharp.

Focused.

Dangerous.

"Who have you spoken to?"

Daniel remained silent.

Richard's face hardened.

"Who?"

Daniel suddenly understood.

Someone was listening.

Watching.

Monitoring.

His father wasn't worried about himself.

He was worried about whoever had found Daniel.

Emma.

The realization hit instantly.

His phone.

Daniel grabbed it.

Five missed calls.

Three unknown numbers.

And one text message.

No sender.

Only four words.

WE FOUND THE GIRL.

His blood turned to ice.

Daniel turned and ran.

Ignoring his father's voice behind him.

Ignoring everything.

Because there was only one thing that mattered now.

May you like

Emma was alone.

And whoever had hunted her for years had finally caught up.
