Chapter 2 His Wife Vanished on Christmas Eve

Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Lies

The silence inside the mansion felt heavier than the Chicago snow piling outside.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Every guest stood frozen, watching the impossible unfold before their eyes.

For years, Isabella Rossi had been considered untouchable.

She was Marcus Vale's right hand.

His adviser.

His gatekeeper.

The woman trusted with information worth millions and secrets worth lives.

Yet now she stood under the glow of the Christmas tree looking less like a powerful executive and more like someone caught standing on a collapsing bridge.

Marcus's gaze never left her.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

"What blocked messages?" Marcus asked quietly.

His security chief hesitated.

Nobody liked delivering bad news to Marcus Vale.

Especially not tonight.

The man swallowed hard.

"Our IT team recovered deleted communication records from the office servers."

Marcus's voice became dangerously calm.

"And?"

"There were forty-three messages from Mrs. Vale."

The security chief looked toward Isabella.

"Most were intercepted before reaching your phone."

A ripple of shock spread through the room.

Marcus slowly turned.

His eyes locked onto Isabella.

She immediately forced a laugh.

"This is ridiculous."

No one joined her.

She crossed her arms.

"Messages get filtered every day. That's how executive offices operate."

Marcus took one step toward her.

The room instinctively stepped back.

"Did you block my wife's messages?"

The question sounded simple.

But everyone present understood the danger beneath it.

Isabella straightened her shoulders.

"I prioritized your schedule."

"That's not what I asked."

The edge in his voice sliced through the room.

For the first time, fear flickered across her face.

"You were busy."

Marcus took another step.

"Did."

Another step.

"You."

Another.

"Block."

Another.

"My."

Another.

"Wife's."

Another.

"Messages?"

Finally, Isabella whispered:

"...yes."

The word landed like an explosion.

Several guests audibly gasped.

My chest tightened.

For months I had wondered whether Marcus simply didn't care.

Whether every unanswered message meant I no longer mattered.

Now the truth stood before us.

Someone had made that decision for him.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Just briefly.

When they opened again, something terrifying had changed.

Not rage.

Disappointment.

The kind that cuts deeper.

"How long?"

Isabella hesitated.

"Seven months."

The room erupted into whispers.

Marcus's jaw tightened.

Seven months.

Seven months of ignored anniversaries.

Missed appointments.

Cancelled dinners.

Lonely nights.

Seven months of believing my husband had stopped choosing me.

And now he looked like a man discovering his own life had been stolen from him piece by piece.

"What else?" Marcus asked.

The security chief immediately answered.

"There are deleted emails."

Silence.

"Calendar modifications."

More silence.

"Phone call rerouting."

Marcus stared at Isabella.

"Anything else?"

Nobody breathed.

The security chief looked uncomfortable.

Then he handed over a tablet.

Marcus read.

His expression darkened.

Then darker.

Then completely unreadable.

"What is it?" I asked softly.

He looked at me.

For a moment I saw genuine pain.

Then he handed me the tablet.

I looked down.

My heart nearly stopped.

The screen displayed dozens of appointment requests.

Marriage counseling.

Dinner reservations.

Weekend trips.

Medical consultations.

All arranged by me.

All canceled.

Every single one.

The cancellation approvals carried Isabella's authorization.

I felt physically sick.

Marcus looked at her.

"Why?"

She didn't answer.

"Why?"

Still silence.

Then suddenly she laughed.

Not nervous.

Not apologetic.

Bitter.

Years of bitterness pouring out.

"Because you never noticed."

The room fell silent again.

Marcus stared.

She continued.

"I kept waiting for you to notice."

"What are you talking about?"

Her eyes glistened.

"You really don't know?"

Marcus said nothing.

Isabella shook her head.

A sad smile appeared.

"I spent ten years helping build your empire."

Nobody interrupted.

"I worked eighteen-hour days."

Her voice trembled.

"I protected your business."

She pointed toward me.

"And every time I looked up, she got everything."

I felt my stomach twist.

Marcus looked disgusted.

"Everything?"

"Your love."

The words echoed through the mansion.

Shock swept through the guests.

Marcus's face hardened instantly.

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

Her voice cracked.

"I loved you."

The confession hung in the air.

Ugly.

Desperate.

Humiliating.

Marcus looked genuinely horrified.

As if the idea had never crossed his mind.

And perhaps it hadn't.

For years Isabella had hidden behind professionalism.

Behind schedules.

Behind meetings.

Behind loyalty.

Now the mask had shattered.

Tears filled her eyes.

"You never saw me."

Marcus's answer came immediately.

"Because I wasn't looking."

The words hit her like a slap.

She staggered.

And for the first time all night, I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Then I remembered every lonely night.

Every canceled appointment.

Every tear.

Every unanswered message.

No.

Pity could wait.

Consequences came first.

Marcus turned to his security chief.

"Escort her out."

Isabella's eyes widened.

"What?"

"Now."

"You can't be serious."

"I trusted you."

His voice shook.

Not with anger.

With betrayal.

"You manipulated my family."

The security chief stepped forward.

"Miss Rossi—"

She backed away.

"No."

Her gaze jumped between Marcus and me.

"No, you don't get to throw me away."

The room tensed.

Marcus's guards immediately moved.

For a second I thought she might completely lose control.

Then suddenly she laughed.

A strange laugh.

Broken.

Defeated.

"You think this changes anything?"

Nobody answered.

She pointed at me.

"She still left."

Then she pointed at Marcus.

"And you still chose business over your marriage."

Marcus's expression darkened.

Because beneath her cruelty hid an uncomfortable truth.

She had manipulated events.

But she hadn't forced Marcus to spend every night away.

She hadn't made him miss anniversaries.

She hadn't ordered him to ignore his wife.

Those choices belonged to him.

And he knew it.

I could see it in his eyes.

The realization was crushing him.

The guards escorted Isabella toward the door.

She didn't resist.

Not anymore.

As she reached the entrance, she turned back one last time.

"Congratulations, Marcus."

Her voice was cold.

"You finally noticed your wife."

Then she disappeared into the snow.

The front door closed.

Silence returned.

Marcus stood motionless.

The guests remained frozen.

Finally he looked at me.

Really looked at me.

Not through me.

Not around me.

At me.

And suddenly all six years crashed between us.

The love.

The loneliness.

The disappointment.

The memories.

The damage.

"Elena..."

His voice broke.

I had never heard that happen before.

Not once.

"I didn't know."

A tear slipped down my cheek.

"I know."

And somehow those words hurt him more than blame ever could.

Because ignorance wasn't innocence.

Not when someone you love has been hurting right in front of you.

Outside, snow continued falling across Chicago.

Inside, the most powerful man in the city finally faced the one thing he had never been able to control.

May you like

The consequences of his own neglect.

And neither of us knew whether our marriage could survive what came next.
