Chapter 10 She Thought She Ruled This Mansion—Until the Door Swung Open and Her Worst Nightmare Stepped Inside

Chapter 10: The Hidden Library

The armored SUV disappeared into the morning fog.
No one spoke.
Oliver sat beside Emily in the back seat.
They stole quiet glances at each other, unsure how to begin.
Fifteen years apart.
A lifetime stolen.
Yet somehow, sitting side by side felt strangely natural.
Emily finally broke the silence.
"Did you really think Dad was dead?"
Oliver nodded.
"And Mom."
She lowered her eyes.
"Victoria told me he abandoned us."
Emily looked out the window.
"My mom said he died in a plane crash."
Both children fell silent.
Different lies.
The same purpose.
To keep a family apart.
In the front seat, Sebastian listened without interrupting.
Each sentence cut deeper than the last.
Olivia reached across the console and quietly took his hand.
For the first time in eleven years...
Neither of them let go.
Three hours later...
The ruins of Blackwood Estate came into view.
Smoke still drifted from the blackened remains.
Firefighters searched through the wreckage while police officers secured the perimeter.
Ryan slowed the SUV.
"They're expecting us."
Several detectives approached.
One of them saluted Ryan.
"The fire's out."
"What caused it?"
The detective shook his head.
"Every security camera failed before the explosion."
Sebastian wasn't surprised.
"They erased the evidence."
Ryan nodded.
"They tried."
He looked toward the mansion.
"But maybe they missed something."
Sebastian stepped out of the vehicle.
The estate looked like a graveyard.
Collapsed walls.
Burned oak beams.
Shattered marble columns.
Everything his family had built over generations...
Reduced to ash.
Mrs. Harper quietly wiped away a tear.
"I never thought I'd see it like this."
Sebastian placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"We'll rebuild."
Then he turned toward what remained of the old library.
"This way."
The library had completely collapsed.
Books lay scattered beneath charred timber.
The scent of smoke lingered in the air.
Sebastian stopped before the massive stone fireplace.
Only the chimney remained standing.
Ryan frowned.
"The vault is under here?"
Sebastian shook his head.
"No."
He knelt and brushed soot away from one corner of the hearth.
Slowly...
A carved wolf appeared beneath the ashes.
Oliver recognized it immediately.
"The same symbol on the key."
Sebastian smiled.
"My grandfather loved riddles."
He inserted the brass key into what looked like nothing more than a crack in the stone.
It fit perfectly.
A deep mechanical click echoed beneath the floor.
The fireplace trembled.
Ancient gears turned.
Then...
The entire hearth slowly slid sideways.
A staircase emerged from the darkness below.
Cold air drifted upward.
Emily stared in amazement.
"How old is this?"
Sebastian looked into the darkness.
"Older than the mansion."
Ryan switched on his flashlight.
"After you."
The staircase descended nearly fifty feet beneath the estate.
The walls were lined with polished granite instead of brick.
Electric lights suddenly flickered to life.
Oliver jumped.
"They still work?"
Sebastian nodded.
"Independent power supply."
Ryan looked impressed.
"Your grandfather planned for everything."
"He trusted almost no one."
At the bottom of the stairs stood an enormous steel door.
Unlike everything else in the tunnel...
It looked modern.
Very modern.
There was no keyhole.
Only three handprints engraved into black glass.
Olivia froze.
"Oh no..."
Ryan looked at her.
"What?"
She stepped closer.
"I've seen this technology."
Sebastian frowned.
"Where?"
"In Project Raven."
Oliver stared at the door.
"There are only three handprints."
Sebastian slowly understood.
"Husband."
"Wife."
"Child."
Olivia nodded.
"The Archive wasn't protected by locks."
"It was protected by family."
Ryan whispered,
"So Gabriel told the truth."
Sebastian placed his hand on the first print.
The scanner glowed blue.
IDENTITY CONFIRMED
Olivia placed her hand beside his.
Another light appeared.
SECOND AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED
Only one handprint remained.
Oliver stepped forward.
Emily did too.
They looked at each other.
"Which one of us?" Emily asked.
No one knew.
Ryan shrugged.
"Try."
Oliver placed his hand on the glass.
Nothing happened.
Emily tried next.
Silence.
Then...
A calm electronic voice echoed through the chamber.
INSUFFICIENT AUTHORIZATION
Sebastian frowned.
"That can't be right."
Suddenly, the scanner projected a holographic message into the air.
GENETIC SEQUENCE INCOMPLETE
Olivia's heart skipped a beat.
"What does that mean?"
The computer continued.
PRIMARY FAMILY UNIT REQUIRES FOUR AUTHORIZED MEMBERS
Everyone froze.
Ryan blinked.
"Four?"
Sebastian looked at Olivia.
"There are only four of us."
The computer answered before anyone spoke.
INCORRECT
Silence.
The system continued.
BLACKWOOD PRIMARY FAMILY UNIT
AUTHORIZED MEMBERS: FIVE
The chamber became deathly quiet.
Oliver looked around in confusion.
"Five?"
Emily whispered,
"Who's missing?"
No one answered.
No one could.
Because no one knew.
Then—
A hidden projector activated.
An old video appeared on the wall.
A younger man stood inside the very same chamber.
Sebastian's father.
William Blackwood.
He looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"...then I've already failed."
Sebastian's chest tightened.
His father had been dead for nearly twenty years.
William continued.
"Sebastian..."
"If you've brought Olivia and the children here..."
"...then the Black Crown has already revealed itself."
Olivia gasped.
"He knew."
William nodded as though hearing her.
"Yes."
"I knew they would come."
Ryan stared at the recording.
"Who were they?"
William sighed.
"They're older than governments."
"Older than corporations."
"They don't seek power."
"They seek control over the future itself."
Oliver frowned.
"I don't understand."
William smiled sadly.
"You will."
He paused.
"But first..."
His expression became grave.
"You need to find your sister."
Emily looked confused.
"I'm right here."
William slowly shook his head.
"No, Emily."
"I'm not talking about you."
Silence crashed over the chamber.
Sebastian's face drained of color.
Olivia covered her mouth.
Oliver felt his heart pounding.
William spoke one final sentence.
"The fifth key..."
"...is your eldest daughter."
The screen went black.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Sebastian whispered,
"Eldest..."
Olivia stared at him in horror.
"That's impossible."
Ryan looked between them.
"Unless..."
Neither of them denied it.
Because both of them remembered something.
A hospital.
A difficult birth.
Doctors.
An emergency.
A few missing hours neither had questioned in fifteen years.
Emily's voice trembled.
"...Are you saying..."
Oliver finished the sentence.
"...we have another sister?"
Far away, inside a quiet boarding school nestled in the Swiss Alps, a seventeen-year-old girl closed the book she had been reading.
A teacher approached with a gentle smile.
"Miss Blackwood."
The girl looked up.
"Yes?"
"You have a visitor."
She frowned.
"I wasn't expecting anyone."
The teacher hesitated.
"Neither were we."
Outside the office window...
May you like
A black limousine bearing a small silver crown had just arrived.
To Be Continued...
