Chapter 1 They laughed when my hair hit the floor. My stepmother called me unstable. My sister called me ugly

Chapter 1 — The Flash Drive

The front door clicked shut with a quiet finality.

For a long moment, nobody moved.

Mira stood in the foyer beneath the crystal chandelier that had hung there since before she was born. Her shaved head caught the warm light, making the pale skin of her scalp impossible to ignore. Tiny cuts from the clippers traced thin red lines above her ears, but she held herself straight, one hand gripping a small silver flash drive.

Across from her, Adrian Vale had not yet taken off his coat.

He stared at his daughter.

His briefcase slipped from his hand and landed on the marble floor with a heavy thud.

"Mira..."

His voice cracked.

She stepped forward without a word and placed the flash drive in his palm.

"I think you should watch this before anyone else explains what happened."

For a lawyer who had spent nearly thirty years reading people, Adrian suddenly found himself unable to breathe.

His daughter's eyes were dry.

That frightened him more than tears ever could.

Behind them, footsteps echoed from the staircase.

Celeste descended gracefully, dressed in a cream silk blouse that made her appear every inch the concerned wife.

"Oh, Adrian." She sighed dramatically. "Thank goodness you're home."

Livia followed close behind, already sniffling.

"I've been so worried about Mira."

Adrian slowly turned toward them.

"What happened?"

Celeste hurried forward, carefully placing one hand against his arm.

"I didn't want you to find out like this."

She lowered her eyes.

"Your daughter had another episode."

Mira remained silent.

Celeste continued.

"She became hysterical after dinner. She accused Livia of stealing from her again. She locked herself in the bathroom..."

Livia dabbed imaginary tears.

"...and before we could stop her, she shaved off all her hair."

Adrian looked back at Mira.

She simply waited.

"...She attacked me when I tried to help," Celeste whispered. "I'm worried she's becoming dangerous."

Silence settled over the room.

Adrian had built his career by recognizing one simple principle.

Whoever spoke first was rarely telling the whole truth.

He slipped the flash drive into his pocket.

"I'll review everything before I make conclusions."

For the first time that evening, Celeste's smile faltered.

Half an hour later.

The study door closed.

Only Adrian and Mira remained inside.

Neither spoke until Adrian inserted the flash drive into his computer.

The video opened.

A timestamp appeared.

6:42 PM.

The bathroom.

The angle came from above.

Not perfect.

Perfect enough.

Adrian watched Celeste force Mira into the chair.

He watched Livia lock the bathroom door.

He watched water dumped over Mira's head.

He heard every insult.

Every threat.

Every laugh.

Every deliberate pass of the electric clippers.

Then came Celeste's voice.

"Your father won't protect you."

Another swipe.

"When he comes home, he'll believe whatever I tell him."

Another lock of black hair fell.

Livia laughed while recording with her phone.

"Smile."

Mira never raised a hand.

Never shouted.

Never fought back.

The recording ended with Celeste wiping fingerprints from the clippers before placing them into Mira's hands.

The room fell silent.

Adrian replayed the final minute.

Then again.

And again.

Finally, he leaned back.

His hands were shaking.

"I married her."

It wasn't a question.

It sounded like a confession.

Mira looked out the window.

"I know."

He removed his glasses.

"When did this start?"

She answered honestly.

"Five years ago."

His head lifted sharply.

"Five..."

She nodded.

"The week after Mom's funeral."

Adrian felt something inside him collapse.

"I didn't know."

"I know."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Mira smiled sadly.

"I tried."

Images flooded Adrian's memory.

A twelve-year-old girl saying she didn't want Celeste packing her lunches.

A teenager insisting jewelry had disappeared.

Small complaints.

Little arguments.

Nothing dramatic.

Every single time...

Celeste had another explanation.

She's grieving.

Teenage girls exaggerate.

She misunderstood.

They're trying to bond.

He had believed the adult.

Instead of the child.

"I'm sorry."

The words barely escaped him.

Mira looked at him.

For the first time all evening, emotion flickered across her face.

"I didn't need you to save me."

She paused.

"I needed you to believe me."

Those words hurt more than any courtroom defeat Adrian had ever suffered.

Downstairs...

Celeste poured herself wine.

"Relax," she told Livia.

"He'll calm down."

Livia wasn't convinced.

"What if she has proof?"

Celeste laughed.

"A shaved head isn't proof."

"But..."

"I've handled bigger problems."

She smiled confidently.

"Your stepfather loves appearances."

"He won't destroy this family over one emotional teenager."

The grandfather clock struck nine.

Then the study door opened.

Adrian walked downstairs carrying several folders.

His face revealed nothing.

"Celeste."

She smiled warmly.

"Yes?"

"My office."

"Now."

Something about his voice caused Livia's stomach to tighten.

Adrian closed the office door.

He remained standing.

Celeste sat.

"What is it?"

Without answering, Adrian turned the computer monitor toward her.

The bathroom video began.

Color drained from her face.

She watched herself smiling.

Watched herself shaving Mira's head.

Watched herself threaten an eighteen-year-old girl.

When the recording ended, the silence was unbearable.

Finally...

She laughed.

"A hidden camera?"

She shrugged.

"That's illegal."

Adrian blinked once.

"Your concern is the camera?"

"It violates privacy."

"You assaulted my daughter."

"I disciplined her."

"You committed battery."

"She's lying."

"I watched it."

"Videos can be edited."

Adrian slowly placed another folder on the desk.

"I thought you might say that."

He opened it.

Phone records.

Security logs.

Time stamps.

Metadata.

Professional verification.

"I've already sent copies to my digital forensics expert."

Celeste swallowed.

"You..."

"I've also backed up the original recording."

Another folder appeared.

"And another copy is currently with my law partner."

A third.

"And another has been uploaded to secure cloud storage."

For the first time in years...

Celeste felt trapped.

She changed tactics instantly.

Tears appeared.

Real enough to fool strangers.

"Adrian..."

She reached for his hand.

"I've been under so much stress."

He didn't move.

"I've been trying so hard to raise Mira."

Silence.

"She reminds me so much of your first wife."

Still silence.

"I lost control."

She cried harder.

"I'm ashamed."

He stared at her.

In court, Adrian had watched professional fraud artists cry on command.

He knew exactly what manufactured remorse looked like.

"Did you ever love my daughter?"

Celeste hesitated.

One second.

Too long.

Adrian noticed.

She forced another sob.

"Of course."

"No."

His voice remained calm.

"You loved what belonged to her."

Her eyes widened.

He continued.

"The jewelry."

"The trust."

"The scholarship fund."

"The house."

"The inheritance."

Each word landed like another stone.

"You married into wealth."

She stood abruptly.

"How dare you!"

He didn't flinch.

"I've spent the last thirty minutes reviewing financial statements."

Her breathing stopped.

"The household account."

"The maintenance account."

"The educational trust reimbursements."

"Interesting patterns."

He slid another document across the desk.

"Why were payments made to your brother?"

She froze.

"It was..."

"A loan?"

"...Yes."

"Without authorization."

"It was temporary."

"You forged my signature."

She stared at him.

He knew.

Everything.

Outside the office...

Livia stood with her ear pressed against the door.

She couldn't hear every word.

Only pieces.

"...Forgery..."

"...Police..."

"...Trust..."

"...Attorney..."

Fear spread through her chest.

She had never imagined Adrian investigating finances.

The shaving had been supposed to humiliate Mira.

Nothing more.

Now everything felt different.

Suddenly...

The office door opened.

Livia nearly stumbled inside.

Adrian looked directly at her.

"Come in."

She obeyed.

Celeste's face had turned ghostly white.

"Livia."

Adrian folded his hands.

"I have one question."

She nodded nervously.

"Where is my late wife's emerald necklace?"

Her heartbeat exploded.

"I..."

"The one missing since Christmas."

"I don't know."

Adrian placed his phone on the desk.

A photograph appeared.

Livia wearing the necklace.

At a party.

Three months earlier.

Date stamped.

She stared at it.

"I..."

"Try again."

"It was just borrowing."

"Mira never wore it."

"It belonged to my wife."

Silence.

"And legally," Adrian continued, "it belongs to Mira."

Livia looked desperately toward her mother.

Celeste remained silent.

For the first time...

She had no rescue.

Midnight.

Mira stood alone inside her bedroom.

The mirror reflected someone unfamiliar.

She reached toward her scalp.

The missing hair no longer mattered.

Hair grew back.

Trust didn't.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

"Come in."

Adrian entered carrying a wooden jewelry box.

She recognized it instantly.

It had belonged to her mother.

"I found this."

He set it on the bed.

"I should have given it to you years ago."

Mira opened it carefully.

Inside lay handwritten letters.

Old photographs.

A silver locket.

Her mother's wedding ring.

And beneath them...

A sealed envelope.

Her name written across the front.

In elegant handwriting.

For Mira.

She looked up.

"Dad..."

"I've never seen it."

She broke the wax seal with trembling fingers.

Inside rested several pages.

Her mother's words seemed to come alive.

My darling girl.

If you are reading this, it means I am no longer beside you.

There is something your father does not know.

Mira frowned.

Adrian leaned closer.

She continued reading.

When your grandfather rewrote our family trust, he worried that wealth attracts the wrong people.

He instructed my attorney to create an additional inheritance known only to two people.

Me.

And the attorney.

Not even your father knows where the documents are kept.

Mira exchanged a stunned look with Adrian.

She read on.

If someone ever tries to take what belongs to you...

Do not fight with anger.

Fight with evidence.

Inside the old greenhouse is a stone bench.

Under the left foundation stone is a brass key.

The key opens Safety Deposit Box 117.

Everything you need is waiting there.

The room became completely silent.

Adrian whispered,

"Your mother hid another inheritance?"

Mira slowly folded the letter.

"I think..."

She looked toward the dark garden outside.

"...she knew this day might come."

Neither of them noticed the light beneath Celeste's bedroom door across the hallway.

She wasn't asleep.

She had heard enough.

And while Adrian believed the truth had finally surfaced...

Celeste quietly opened her phone.

She dialed a number she had sworn never to call again.

The man answered on the second ring.

"I told you never to contact me," he growled.

Celeste's voice trembled.

"I need your help."

"What happened?"

"They found the video."

Silence.

Then the man asked one question.

"...Did they find the will?"

Celeste closed her eyes.

"Not yet."

The line went dead.

Far away, someone unlocked a drawer that had remained closed for nearly twenty years.

Inside lay a faded legal file bearing one handwritten name.

Evelyn Vale.

And beneath it, a single note:

Destroy before Mira turns twenty-one.
