Chapter 1 The Woman on the Hospital Bed Was His Everything

Chapter 1: The Secret That Refused to Die

The corridor exploded into chaos.

“Clear!”

The doctor pressed the paddles against Lena’s chest.

Her body jerked violently.

Nothing.

The monitor continued its terrible scream.

Dante stood frozen outside the emergency room doors, unable to move, unable to breathe.

For years he had faced bullets without blinking.

He had ordered executions.

He had watched enemies beg for mercy.

None of it had shaken him.

Yet seeing Lena lying there between life and death made his entire world collapse.

“Again!”

The doctor charged the paddles.

“Clear!”

Another shock.

Lena’s body arched.

The monitor suddenly flickered.

A weak heartbeat appeared.

Then another.

And another.

The room erupted with movement.

“We have a pulse!”

“Blood pressure is still dropping!”

“Prepare the OR!”

“Move!”

Dante released a breath he did not realize he had been holding.

For one brief second.

Only one.

Then Vanessa’s words returned to him.

She was never supposed to make it here alive.

Slowly, terrifyingly slowly, Dante turned toward the woman beside him.

Vanessa’s face had gone white.

The confidence she always carried was gone.

Fear had replaced it.

Real fear.

The kind people felt when they realized they had made a mistake they could never undo.

“What did you mean?” Dante asked quietly.

Vanessa swallowed.

“I—I didn’t mean—”

“What did you mean?”

His voice remained calm.

That was what frightened people most.

Because everyone knew Dante Moretti only shouted when he was already killing someone.

Vanessa took a step back.

“You’re overreacting.”

Dante stared at her.

The guards behind him exchanged nervous glances.

No one dared speak.

No one dared breathe.

Then Dante raised one hand.

Immediately, two guards seized Vanessa’s arms.

“Dante!”

“You have thirty seconds.”

“Let go of me!”

“Twenty-nine.”

Her eyes widened.

“You can’t do this!”

“Twenty-eight.”

“Dante!”

“Twenty-seven.”

The panic became visible.

Vanessa knew him.

She knew that countdown.

People who reached zero never spoke again.

“Fine!” she screamed.

The corridor fell silent.

Dante’s eyes never left her face.

Vanessa looked toward the emergency room.

Toward Lena.

Hatred flashed through her expression.

“She ruined everything!”

Dante’s jaw tightened.

“Explain.”

“You left her!”

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“You chose me! You promised the past was over!”

Dante said nothing.

“So when I found out she was pregnant…”

The entire hallway seemed to stop moving.

Even the nurses stared.

“You what?”

Vanessa looked away.

Dante already knew.

He could see the truth.

Like poison spilling from a broken glass.

“You found out about the baby.”

Tears appeared in Vanessa’s eyes.

“She contacted your office months ago.”

Dante felt something cold spread through his body.

Months ago.

Lena had tried to reach him.

Months ago.

“She sent letters,” Vanessa whispered.

“She begged to speak to you.”

Dante’s heartbeat became deafening.

Letters.

There had been letters.

His assistant had mentioned them.

Vanessa always handled personal matters.

He never questioned it.

“Where are they?”

Vanessa remained silent.

Dante’s voice dropped.

“Where.”

“I burned them.”

The words hit harder than any bullet.

For a moment Dante saw nothing.

Only memories.

Lena laughing in his garden.

Lena asleep beside him.

Lena crying the night he told her to leave because enemies were closing in around him.

He had convinced himself it was for her safety.

Then pride had done the rest.

Months became years.

And now—

She had been carrying his child.

Alone.

The emergency room doors burst open.

A surgeon rushed out.

“Who is family?”

Dante stepped forward instantly.

The doctor hesitated.

Everyone knew who he was.

“Mr. Moretti?”

“How is she?”

The doctor glanced at his chart.

“She has internal bleeding.”

Dante’s stomach tightened.

“The baby?”

The doctor looked surprised.

“You know?”

“Yes.”

The doctor nodded.

“The child is alive.”

Relief nearly dropped Dante to his knees.

But it vanished instantly.

“The next hour is critical.”

Dante stared.

“What are her chances?”

The doctor did not answer immediately.

That silence told him everything.

“Do whatever it takes.”

“Sir—”

“Whatever it takes.”

The surgeon nodded.

Then disappeared again.

Dante remained motionless.

Behind him, Vanessa began crying.

“You’re choosing her.”

Slowly he turned.

“No.”

Vanessa looked hopeful.

Then Dante finished.

“I’m choosing my family.”

The hope vanished.

Guards tightened their grip.

“Take her.”

“Dante!”

“Lock her in the estate.”

“You can’t!”

“Until I discover exactly what happened.”

Panic exploded across her face.

Because she understood.

If Lena’s injuries were not an accident...

Then Dante would uncover every detail.

And no one survived betraying him.

The guards dragged Vanessa away.

Her screams echoed down the corridor.

Dante ignored them.

For the first time in years, there was only one thing that mattered.

Lena.

Hours passed.

The hospital entered the quiet darkness that came after midnight.

Rain struck the windows.

Machines hummed.

Doctors whispered.

Dante sat outside the operating room.

Waiting.

Praying.

Something he had not done since childhood.

At 2:17 a.m., the doors finally opened.

The surgeon stepped out.

Exhaustion covered his face.

Dante stood instantly.

The doctor smiled.

A small smile.

But enough.

“Both survived.”

The world stopped.

Then started again.

Dante closed his eyes.

For the first time in years, he felt emotion crack through the armor around his heart.

“Can I see her?”

“She’s unconscious.”

“I’ll wait.”

The doctor nodded.

“She’ll be moved to intensive care.”

As the medical team rolled Lena’s bed past him, Dante saw her face.

Still pale.

Still fragile.

But alive.

A tiny incubator followed behind.

Inside it lay a baby boy.

Small.

Perfect.

Fighting.

The nurse adjusted the blanket.

“Five pounds.”

Dante stared.

His son.

His son.

The realization hit harder than anything else.

The child opened his eyes for a brief second.

Dark eyes.

Exactly like his father’s.

Something broke inside Dante.

Years of violence.

Years of blood.

Years of becoming a monster.

And suddenly none of it mattered.

Because this tiny child existed.

Because Lena had protected him.

Alone.

When she should never have been alone.

A nurse smiled softly.

“Would you like to hold him?”

Dante froze.

“I…”

The nurse gently placed the infant into his arms.

Dante had held guns.

Knives.

Power.

Entire cities.

But nothing had ever felt heavier than this.

Or more precious.

The baby wrapped a tiny hand around his finger.

And Dante Moretti—the man feared by half the country—felt tears burn behind his eyes.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

The words were meant for both of them.

For Lena.

For the son he never knew existed.

And at that exact moment, three floors below, another storm was beginning.

A black SUV pulled into the hospital parking lot.

Four men stepped out.

Armed.

Dangerous.

Not Moretti soldiers.

Enemies.

Watching the building.

One man spoke into his phone.

“Target survived.”

Silence answered.

Then a cold voice replied.

“Finish the job.”

The call ended.

The men loaded their weapons.

Upstairs, Dante sat beside Lena’s hospital bed, unaware that death was already climbing the stairs toward the woman he loved.

And this time, it was not Vanessa pulling the strings.

It was someone far more dangerous.

Someone from Dante’s past.

Someone who had waited years for revenge.

Someone who knew a secret capable of destroying everything.

Including the truth about Lena’s baby.

To be continued...
