Chapter 6 - The Hospital Room

The pediatric ward at Yale New Haven Hospital was quiet, lit by soft golden nightlights.
I opened the door to Room 412 softly. Claire was lying in a specialized medical bed, a light back brace supporting her spine, a tiny IV tube taped to the back of her hand. Seven-month-old Owen was fast asleep in a wooden crib beside her bed, his soft breathing filling the quiet room.
When Claire saw me walk in, her large blue eyes lit up, but then a shadow of anxiety crossed her small face. She started to push herself up.
“Dad... I’m sorry,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Is the kitchen clean? Did Vanessa get mad?”
My heart shattered into a thousand pieces. I rushed to her bedside, gently pressing her back against the pillows, taking her warm, tiny hand into both of ours.
“Claire... look at me, sweetie,” I said, tears finally spilling down my cheeks, blurring my vision. “You didn't do anything wrong. You hear me? Never again. You are never, ever going to be hurt again.”
Claire looked at me, her lower lip trembling. “Is Vanessa coming back?”
“No,” I said, kissing her forehead. “Vanessa is gone. She’s never coming near you or Owen ever again. And neither is Arthur.”
Claire closed her eyes, a massive, shuddering sigh of relief escaping her chest. A tear leaked from the corner of her eye, tracing down her pale cheek. “My back hurt so much, Dad... but I had to keep Owen safe. She said if he cried, she would send him away.”
I pulled a chair right up to the edge of the bed, burying my face against her small shoulder, weeping silently for the time I had lost, for the pain she had endured while I was sitting in glass boardrooms chasing billions.

“I’m sorry, Claire,” I sobbed into her blanket. “I’m so sorry I wasn't there to protect you.”
Claire’s tiny hand reached out, gently patting my head, exactly the way her mother used to do before she passed away. “It’s okay, Dad,” she whispered softly. “You came when I called.”
