Chapter 6 - Retribution and Rebirth

The jury deliberated for less than two hours. The verdicts were unanimous: Guilty on all counts.
Victoria Montgomery was sentenced to life in a maximum-security prison without the possibility of parole for attempted premeditated murder and conspiracy. Ethan, due to his cooperation with the financial side of the investigation in a desperate bid for a lighter sentence, was given thirty-five years for his complicity in the attempted murder and corporate fraud.
The Montgomery name was completely wiped clean from the Manhattan elite. The townhouse on the Upper East Side was seized by the government and auctioned off, with the proceeds going directly to a fund Emily established for victims of domestic abuse and corporate exploitation.
On a crisp autumn afternoon, Emily stood outside the courthouse, surrounded by a sea of reporters and flashing cameras.
"Emily! How does it feel to see the Montgomery family ruined?" a reporter shouted, thrusting a microphone toward her.

Emily looked directly into the camera lens, her eyes bright and filled with an unbreakable spirit. "The Montgomery family wasn't ruined by me," she said clearly. "They were ruined by their own greed and the illusion that wealth makes you untouchable. Justice doesn't care about your family name, your diamond bracelets, or your silver dinnerware."
With those final words, Emily turned her back on the media circus and walked down the courthouse steps, leaving the shadows of her past behind her.
