Chapter 5 - The Trial of the Upper East Side

Six months later, the federal courthouse in Manhattan was packed to maximum capacity. The trial of Victoria and Ethan Montgomery had become the most publicized legal battle of the decade.
Victoria sat at the defense table, looking significantly aged, her signature expensive perfume replaced by the sterile scent of the holding facility. She still tried to hold her head high, but her arrogance was entirely empty. Ethan sat beside her, staring blankly at his hands, completely broken by months of isolation.
The defense tried to argue that the video footage from the hospital room was manipulated, and that Emily’s fall from the balcony was a tragic accident caused by a loose architectural fixture.
Then, the prosecution called their star witness.
The doors of the courtroom opened, and Emily entered. She was no longer wearing the heavy plaster cast. She walked down the aisle with a slight, elegant cane, her posture proud and unyielding. The scars on her jaw from the fall were visible, but she wore them like a badge of honor.
When she took the stand, the entire courtroom fell into a dead silence.
For three hours, Emily didn't just give a testimony; she delivered a masterclass in forensic accounting and survival. She presented the decrypted emails between Ethan and his mother detailing the insurance fraud scheme. She played the audio recording of the hospital room where Ethan agreed to the second murder attempt.
Finally, the prosecution played the high-definition video of Victoria pressing the pillow onto Emily’s face. The jury watched in horror as Victoria’s cold, triumphant face filled the large projection screens.

Victoria couldn't contain her rage any longer. She stood up, slamming her hands on the table. "She is a nobody! A parasite who tried to crawl into our world! She deserved to die in that courtyard!"
The judge banged his gavel repeatedly, but the damage was done. Victoria had confessed her true nature to the entire world.
