Chapter 9: Rebuilding from the Ashes

Six months later.

The judge didn't show any mercy. Grant was sentenced to fifteen years in a maximum-security prison without the possibility of parole for ten. Elaine and Dennis were sentenced to four years each in state penitentiary.

Vance Construction was liquidated to pay for the massive civil lawsuit Evelyn and I filed against them. Because the software patent belonged entirely to me, I bought back the company’s physical assets at an auction for pennies on the dollar.

I rebranded the company to Phoenix Development.

I stood in the newly renovated office lobby, looking at the bright, open spaces filled with glass and natural light. No more dark corners. No more hidden secrets.

My sister, Lily, walked in, carrying two cups of coffee. She smiled, looking around. “It looks beautiful, Clara. You really did it.”

“We did it,” I corrected her, taking a sip.

My phone buzzed. It was an alert from my bank. The final transfer from the liquidation of Grant’s personal assets had cleared. I was now completely independent, wealthier than the Vance family had ever been, and entirely free.

I looked down at my right palm. The scar was there—a faint, silvery reminder of the night I almost broke. But it didn’t feel like a mark of shame anymore. It felt like a badge of honor. It was proof that I fought, survived, and won.
