Chapter 6: The Noose Tightens
The next morning, a warrant was issued for Grant’s immediate arrest. But when the police went to his motel room, he was gone. He had skipped bail.
Elaine and Dennis were brought into the police station for questioning. They sat in the interrogation room, looking old, frail, and stripped of their country-club arrogance.
Detective Ruiz played my recorded phone call for them.
“Your son is a fugitive,” Mara said, leaning over the table. “And based on the video evidence from the night of the assault, the District Attorney is officially filing charges against both of you as accessories to felony aggravated battery and tampering with evidence.”
Elaine gasped, clutching her pearls. “What?! I didn't touch her! I just drank wine!”
“You witnessed a felony assault, failed to render aid, encouraged the abuser, and attempted to cover it up by lying to responding officers,” Mara said coldly. “Dennis turned up the television to drown out the victim’s screams. That makes you accomplices. You have one chance to save yourselves: Where is Grant?”
Dennis looked at Elaine, his face pale. The “private family matter” was now a federal manhunt.
“He… he took our Mercedes,” Dennis confessed, his voice shaking. “He said he was going to the marina. He has a boat registered under a shell company. He’s trying to get to international waters.”

Mara slammed her notepad shut and walked out of the room. She called me immediately. “Clara, we know where he is. We’re moving in. Stay at the safe house.”
But I couldn't just sit there. I knew Grant’s boat. I knew his habits. And I knew exactly how to make sure he didn't escape.
