Chapter 5 - The Forensic Audit

When Courtroom Four reconvened, the atmosphere was entirely different. The cocky, self-assured energy on the right side of the room had vanished, replaced by the grim solemnity of a funeral.

Adrian sat beside Russell Crane, his head bowed, his custom suit looking suddenly too big for his slumped shoulders.

Mara sat at her table, her sons still seated quietly nearby. She looked calm, poised, and utterly in control.

Judge Calder settled behind the bench, his expression stern. "Mr. Crane, have you and your client reached a resolution regarding the outstanding matters of custody and asset division?"

Russell Crane stood up, his voice lacking its previous theatrical flourish. "Yes, Your Honor. In light of the newly disclosed corporate documents, my client has agreed to withdraw his petition for primary physical custody. He is prepared to agree to sole physical and legal custody being awarded to Mrs. Lane, with reasonable, supervised visitation to be determined by a court-appointed therapist."

A quiet sigh of relief escaped from Samuel and Owen’s corner. Mara squeezed her hands together in her lap, her eyes shining with a quiet, triumphant light.

"And what of the financial assets, Mr. Crane?" Judge Calder asked.

"My client agrees to waive all claims to the McLean residence, the investment portfolios, and any corporate shares of Hollis Transit Systems," Russell said, reading from a hastily scribbled sheet of paper. "Furthermore, he agrees to cooperate fully with the forensic audit of the company's accounts and will assume personal liability for any financial discrepancies discovered during his tenure as CEO."

"Mr. Hollis," Judge Calder said, looking down at the broken man. "Do you understand and agree to these terms?"

Adrian slowly stood up. He looked across the room at Mara. For twelve years, he had believed she was weak because she was quiet. He had believed she was simple because she didn't care about the spotlights or the applause. He had underestimated her, and in doing so, he had destroyed himself.

"I agree, Your Honor," Adrian whispered.

"Very well," Judge Calder said, his gavel hovering. "The court awards sole custody of Samuel and Owen Hollis to Mara Lane. The division of corporate and personal assets will be finalized upon the completion of the forensic audit, which will be overseen by a court-appointed trustee. This matter is adjourned."

Crack.

The gavel fell, and with it, the final curtain on Adrian Hollis’s fabricated life.

As the courtroom emptied, Adrian stood alone at his table. He watched Mara walk over to their sons, kneeling down to hug them tightly. They smiled, their small arms wrapping around her neck, their laughter echoing in the quiet room.

He took a step toward them, his hand reaching out. "Mara... please. Can I just say goodbye to them?"

Mara stood up, turning to face him. Her eyes were no longer cold; they were simply empty of any feeling for him.

"They need some time, Adrian," Mara said quietly. "And so do you. You spent twelve years building a monument to yourself. I suggest you use the next few years trying to find out who you actually are when the lights go out."

She took her sons' hands and walked out of Courtroom Four, leaving him standing in the shadows of his own ruin.
