Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

"This court will recess for two hours," Judge Calder announced, his gavel coming down with a thunderous crack. "Mr. Hollis, I suggest you spend this time conferring with your counsel. When we reconvene at one o'clock, I expect a fully revised custody and asset proposal. And Mr. Crane—if I discover that your firm assisted in concealing these corporate records, I will personally refer you to the state bar association."

The judge rose and exited the courtroom, leaving behind a scene of absolute chaos.

The gallery erupted into frantic whispering. Members of the local press, who had come expecting a routine story about a wealthy man divorcing his quiet wife, were already typing furiously on their phones.

Adrian turned on Mara, his face twisted in rage. "You think you're clever, don't you? You think you can take my company from me? I built that brand! I worked eighteen-hour days while you sat at home playing housewife!"

"You worked eighteen-hour days using my grandfather's blood, sweat, and tears, Adrian," Mara said quietly, her voice devoid of anger, which only seemed to make her words more terrifying. "And I sat at home raising our sons because you told the board that having a 'traditional family' was good for our public relations. I played the part you wanted. But you forgot that when a director gets too arrogant, the producer can always cancel the show."

"Mara, please," Paige stepped forward, her voice high and desperate, trying to find her PR footing. "There are over four hundred employees at Hollis Transit. If this information gets out, the stock will crater. The venture partners will pull their funding. We can resolve this quietly."

Mara looked at Paige, her eyes scanning the younger woman's expensive suit and the pearl earrings that Adrian had bought using a corporate credit card—a card funded by Mara's holding company.

"Actually, Ms. Ellison, the board has already been notified," Mara said, pulling a sleek tablet from her bag. "An emergency board meeting was called at nine-thirty this morning. As the majority shareholder of Lane Logistics, which holds the controlling interest in Hollis Transit, I voted to strip Adrian of his executive powers, freeze his corporate accounts, and suspend his employment pending a forensic audit."

Adrian’s breath hitched. "You... you can't do that."

"I can, and I did," Mara said. "Marcus, my head of security, is currently executing the transition of power at the corporate headquarters in McLean. If you attempt to log into your corporate email or enter the building, you will find your credentials have been revoked."

She turned toward Samuel and Owen, who were standing by the door, waiting for her. She offered them a warm, soft smile—the first real smile she had shown all morning.

"Let's go get some lunch, boys," she said, taking their hands.

As she walked out of the courtroom, the heavy oak doors swinging shut behind her, Adrian collapsed into his chair, his head in his hands, realizing that the golden empire he had bragged about was nothing more than a house of cards—and his wife had just blown it all away.
