Chapter 5 - The Compass's Secret

"We have to go. Now!" Daniel yelled, already running toward the door.
"Marcy!" Ava screamed into her intercom. "Call my private security team. Have them intercept Lily at her school immediately! Do not let anyone near her!"
They scrambled into Ava’s SUV, Daniel taking the wheel and tearing down the driveway of the estate. The rain was pouring harder now, blurring the road as they raced toward the suburban elementary school.
For twenty agonizing minutes, neither of them spoke. Daniel gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white, his eyes wild with the primal fear of a father whose child was in danger. Ava prayed silently, her hand resting on his shoulder, offering whatever comfort she could.
When they pulled up to the school, Ava’s security chief, a burly ex-military man named Marcus, was already standing by the front doors with Lily.
"Daddy!" Lily cried, breaking away from Marcus and sprinting through the rain.
Daniel threw himself out of the car, catching her in his arms and hugging her so tightly he lifted her off the ground. "I’ve got you, baby. I’ve got you. You're safe."
Ava joined them, her heart bursting at the sight. She looked at Marcus. "Did they get away?"
"Yes, ma'am," Marcus reported. "A black Mercedes sedan sped off the moment we arrived. We got the plate, but it’s registered to a shell corporation owned by Hawthorne AeroSystems."
"Julian," Ava whispered, a cold rage settling deep into her bones. "He’s desperate."
They returned to the Hawthorne estate, locking the gates and placing the entire property under armed guard. Lily was set up in the library with a warm blanket and a movie, unaware of the storm raging around her.
In the conservatory, Ava and Daniel stood over the workbench.
"Why is Julian so terrified of this compass?" Daniel muttered, taking the necklace off and placing it under a magnifying lamp. "If Nathan wanted me to show it to you, there has to be more to it than just a memory."
Ava stared at the silver compass. She reached out, her fingers tracing the edge of the metal. She pressed her thumb against the tiny, crescent-shaped scar she had caused twelve years ago in Aspen.
Click.
A soft, mechanical sound echoed in the quiet room.
Daniel gasped as the back of the compass popped open, revealing a tiny, hollow compartment. Hidden inside was a micro-SD card, wrapped in a protective layer of waterproof plastic.
"Oh my God," Ava whispered.
Daniel carefully extracted the card. He grabbed his laptop from his tool bag, slipped the card into a reader, and plugged it in.
A single, encrypted folder appeared on the screen. The password prompt popped up.
"What could the password be?" Daniel asked.
Ava didn't hesitate. She typed in the date of their wedding anniversary, followed by the coordinates of the Aspen cabin: 0812-ASPEN.
The folder opened.
Inside were hundreds of documents, blueprints, and recorded phone calls. The files detailed a massive, illegal conspiracy spearheaded by Julian Hawthorne to sell hacked flight-control software to foreign militaries—the very software Nathan had refused to authorize.
The final file was a video.
Ava clicked play. Nathan’s face appeared on the screen, looking tired, bruised, but his eyes were filled with the same warmth she had loved her entire life.
"Ava, my love," Nathan’s recorded voice spoke, and Ava covered her mouth to muffle a sob. "If you are seeing this, it means someone found my compass. I am so sorry I had to leave you in the dark. Julian sabotaged my helicopter. I barely survived. I had to fake my death to stop him from using you as leverage. Everything you need to destroy his empire and bring him to justice is on this drive. Live your life, my beautiful Ava. Be happy. You are worth keeping."
The video faded to black.
Ava wept openly, the weight of eight years of unresolved grief finally lifting from her shoulders. She felt a warm, strong hand slide into hers. She looked up to see Daniel watching her, his gray eyes shining with tears of his own.

"We have to finish this," Daniel said softly.
"We will," Ava promised, squeezing his hand. "Together."
