Chapter 4 - The Legal Warfare Begins

The next forty-eight hours were a living nightmare for Claire.
The story had leaked. Just as Julian Vance had threatened, a local tabloid had picked up the rumor. The headline on Wednesday morning read:
Billionaire CEO or Baby Daddy? Ethan Cole’s Mysterious Midnight Deliveries to Low-Level Employee Sparks Corporate Scandal.
The board of directors at Cole Medical Logistics was in an uproar. Ethan spent his days in emergency meetings, defending his actions to a room full of panicked investors who cared far more about stock prices than a baby's empty stomach.
Claire felt a crushing sense of guilt. "I should resign," she told Ethan in his office on Wednesday evening, her voice breaking. "This is my fault. If I hadn't sent that text... if I had just gone to the shelter..."
"No," Ethan said, walking over to her and gently taking her hands. He looked her directly in the eyes, his gaze steady and filled with an intense, protective warmth. "Don't you dare blame yourself, Claire. You did what any loving mother would do to protect her child. Tyler and his uncle are predators. They are trying to use your vulnerability and my wealth to extort us. If we back down now, they win."
"But your company—"
"I don't care about the company if it means letting a monster take a baby away from her mother," Ethan said firmly. "I’ve hired Victoria Sterling. She’s the best family law attorney in the state. We are not paying them a single cent. We are going to court, and we are going to fight."
On Friday morning, the Indianapolis family courthouse was swarming with reporters.
Claire clutched Sophie tightly against her chest as she, Ethan, and Victoria Sterling pushed past the flashing cameras and into the building.
The courtroom was cold and sterile. Tyler sat at the petitioner's table beside his uncle, Julian. He was wearing a slick gray suit, looking every bit the repentant, concerned father he was pretending to be.
The judge, a formidable woman named Margaret Thornton, took her seat and banged her gavel.
"We are here today to address the emergency petition for temporary custody of Sophia Morgan, filed by the father, Tyler Vance," Judge Thornton began, scanning the documents.
Julian Vance stood up first. "Your Honor, my client’s petition is based on the immediate welfare of the child. For the past seven months, Sophia has been raised in an environment of extreme instability. Ms. Morgan has faced eviction, has zero savings, and has been unable to provide basic nutrition. We have evidence that she had to rely on a late-night delivery of formula from a wealthy corporate executive, Mr. Ethan Cole, who has since used his position to establish an inappropriate, financially dependent relationship with her."
"That is a lie!" Claire cried out, unable to contain herself.
"Order in the court," Judge Thornton warned, her eyes narrowing.
Victoria Sterling, Claire’s attorney, stood up calmly. "Your Honor, my client's financial struggle is the direct result of Mr. Vance's total abandonment. He has paid zero child support, ignored every legal notification, and changed his address specifically to avoid his paternal responsibilities. Mr. Cole's involvement was a singular act of humanitarian charity that has since transitioned into a legitimate, professional employment opportunity for a highly qualified medical professional."
"Be that as it may," Judge Thornton said, looking at Claire with a stern, objective expression. "The financial disparity between the parties is stark. While a father's past absence is troubling, the court must prioritize the child's immediate stability. If Ms. Morgan's housing and financial situation are as precarious as the bank records suggest, I may have no choice but to grant temporary joint custody to the father pending a full evaluation."
Tyler smirked from his table, casting a triumphant look at Claire.
Claire felt her heart shatter. Joint custody? Letting Tyler—the man who had left them to starve—take her baby for weekends? She couldn't breathe.

But before the judge could make a ruling, Victoria Sterling stepped forward.
"Your Honor, before you make a temporary ruling, we have emergency evidence to present regarding the petitioner’s true motives and financial dealings."
