Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm & Corporate Backlash

The threat was not a bluff.
By Monday morning, Claire’s first day at Cole Medical Logistics was overshadowed by a heavy, dark cloud. She had spent the weekend in a state of sheer panic, holding Sophie close and locking her doors. She hadn't told Ethan about Tyler’s visit; she was too ashamed. He had already done so much for her. How could she drag him into the messy, toxic drama of her past?
But Tyler had no such reservations.
At 10:30 AM, while Claire was sitting at her new desk in the Patient Services department, learning the software system, a sudden hush fell over the floor.
Claire looked up.
Two men in dark suits were walking down the corridor, accompanied by the head of corporate security. They walked straight toward Ethan’s executive suite.
Shortly after, Claire's phone on her desk rang. It was Sarah, Ethan's assistant. Her voice sounded strained.
"Claire? Can you please come up to the CEO's office? Mr. Cole needs to see you immediately."
Claire’s stomach dropped. She stood up, her legs feeling like lead, and took the elevator to the top floor.
When she entered Ethan's office, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Ethan was standing behind his desk, his face pale and set in a hard, dangerous line. Across from him sat an older man in a tailored gray suit—Julian Vance, a prominent family law attorney in Indianapolis, and Tyler Vance's uncle.
"Claire, please sit down," Ethan said softly, his eyes searching her face with deep concern.
Claire sat in the leather chair, her hands clenched in her lap.
Julian Vance adjusted his glasses and looked at Claire with cold, professional disdain. "Ms. Morgan, my client, Tyler Vance, has filed an emergency petition for temporary custody of his daughter, Sophia Morgan."
Claire gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "No... he can't do that! He abandoned her!"
"My client admits he made mistakes during your pregnancy due to financial instability," Julian said smoothly, sliding a manila folder across the desk. "However, he is now gainfully employed and prepared to offer Sophia a stable, two-parent home with the support of his extended family. More importantly, we have compiled documented evidence of your extreme financial distress over the past six months."
He opened the folder, revealing copies of Claire's bank statements, her bounced checks, and her eviction notices.
"You have been unable to provide the bare necessities for the child," Julian continued, his voice devoid of empathy. "In fact, just last week, you were forced to beg a complete stranger online for seventy dollars to buy baby formula."
"That is because Tyler didn't pay a single cent of child support!" Claire cried, tears of frustration streaming down her face. "I was working twelve-hour shifts while my baby was in the NICU!"
"The court looks at the current stability of the environment, Ms. Morgan," Julian said coldly. "And speaking of the 'stranger' you begged for money..."
Julian turned his gaze to Ethan.
"Mr. Cole, your sudden, highly irregular involvement in my client's daughter's life has raised some very serious questions. You bypassed your own human resources department to hire Ms. Morgan at an inflated salary. You personally delivered items to her apartment at midnight. You have provided her with a luxury vehicle transport. My client is prepared to argue in court that you are using your immense wealth to manipulate Ms. Morgan and alienate a father from his child."
"That is complete and utter nonsense," Ethan growled, his voice low and dangerous. "I answered a wrong-number text to feed a hungry baby. Any decent human being would have done the same."

"Perhaps," Julian smiled, a wicked, triumphant look in his eyes. "But the media will see it differently. A billionaire bachelor CEO taking a sudden, deeply personal interest in a young, vulnerable female employee? The Board of Directors at Cole Medical Logistics might find the optics... problematic. If this goes to a public trial, the reputation of your company will be dragged through the mud."
Julian stood up and buttoned his jacket. "We are prepared to offer a settlement. If Mr. Cole agrees to pay my client a sum of one million dollars, Tyler will sign away his parental rights permanently, and Ms. Morgan can keep her daughter. You have forty-eight hours to decide. If you refuse, we see you in court on Friday."
