Chapter 7
Chapter 7: The Silent Observer
Arthur slowly, deliberately slipped his right hand inside the breast pocket of his immaculate black tuxedo jacket.
His long, elegant fingers wrapped securely around the small, black digital remote that controlled the home's integrated security and monitoring network.
He didn't press the button. Not yet.
First, he wanted to be absolutely, undeniably certain. He wanted to watch the real thief squirm.
Daniel spoke up again, breaking the silence.
"Mom is right, Grace. Just... just get your things and get out."
The sentence sounded incredibly rehearsed. Forced. Hollow. It lacked any genuine anger or righteous indignation. It was the desperate plea of a man who just wanted the evidence of his sins to walk out the front door forever.
Grace finally lifted her head and looked directly at him.
The betrayal cut deeper than the slap. In ten years, she had watched Daniel grow from a reckless, arrogant college graduate into what she thought was a successful, responsible businessman.
She remembered sitting at the kitchen island for hours, helping him practice his early job interviews.
She remembered cooking him homemade chicken soup from scratch when he caught the flu.
She even remembered sitting in the cold, sterile waiting room of the hospital, staying awake all night, terrified and praying, waiting for him to wake up after a terrible car accident years ago.
And now, he couldn't even meet her eyes. He was throwing her to the wolves to save his own skin.
Evelyn stepped forward and grabbed Lily’s arm, gently but firmly peeling the child’s desperate fingers away from Grace's apron.
The child immediately reached back, screaming and crying silently, her arms flailing.
Grace took one reluctant, heavy step toward the front door.
Then another.
Each step felt physically heavier than the last, as if she were walking through wet concrete. She had entered this grand house every single morning for a decade believing that loyalty, honesty, and hard work actually meant something.
Tonight, she was leaving through those exact same doors as a convicted thief.
May you like
Or so they believed.
Arthur kept his eyes locked on Daniel.
