PART 3 — The Man at the Gate

The room fell silent.

Grace looked from Katherine's terrified face to the black SUV parked in the driveway.

The man who stepped out moved with quiet confidence.

He wasn't in a hurry.

He didn't need to be.

He wore a perfectly tailored charcoal suit despite the late hour. Silver streaks ran through his dark hair, and a leather briefcase hung from one hand. Even from the second-floor window, Grace could tell he was accustomed to being obeyed.

The front gate had already opened.

Someone had let him in.

"Who is he?" Grace asked again.

Katherine's lips trembled.

"His name is Victor Ashcroft."

The name meant nothing to Grace.

But the fear in Katherine's eyes meant everything.

"What does he want?"

Katherine looked toward the door as though expecting him to walk straight into the room.

"He never wants only one thing."

Downstairs, the front doorbell rang.

Once.

Then again.

Not impatiently.

Politely.

Robert glanced toward Grace.

"I'll handle it."

"No."

Grace stopped him.

"We don't know why he's here."

Frank moved toward the hallway closet and quietly picked up the cordless house phone.

"I'll stay close."

Grace squeezed Katherine's hand.

"Lock this door."

"I'll be back."

Katherine caught her wrist.

"Please..."

Grace looked down.

"Don't leave me alone."

The words were barely audible.

Grace nodded.

"Then you come with me."

The entire family gathered in the entrance hall.

Caleb stood near the staircase, still pale from everything that had happened upstairs.

When he looked through the glass panels beside the front door, his expression changed.

"You know him?"

Grace asked.

Caleb hesitated.

"I've seen him."

"Where?"

"At Beatrice's graduation."

That answer surprised everyone.

"You never mentioned him."

"I didn't know his name."

Robert unlocked the door but kept the security chain fastened.

"Can I help you?"

The stranger smiled politely.

"Good evening."

"My apologies for the late visit."

"My name is Victor Ashcroft."

"I'm looking for Miss Katherine Ellis."

Grace felt Katherine tense beside her.

Victor noticed immediately.

"There you are."

His smile widened.

"I've been searching for you."

Grace stepped in front of Katherine.

"Why?"

Victor looked at Grace with professional courtesy.

"And you are?"

"I'm her mother-in-law."

"A pleasure."

"I wish we were meeting under happier circumstances."

Grace didn't return the smile.

"You haven't answered my question."

Victor adjusted his cufflinks.

"I have documents that belong to Miss Ellis."

"What kind of documents?"

"Private ones."

"They can be given to her through an attorney."

Victor chuckled softly.

"I was hoping to avoid lawyers."

Grace's instincts sharpened.

People who wanted to avoid lawyers usually had a reason.

"I wasn't."

She answered calmly.

Victor remained perfectly composed.

"I assure you, Mrs...?"

"Holloway."

"Mrs. Holloway."

"I have no intention of causing trouble."

Katherine suddenly whispered,

"You're lying."

Everyone looked at her.

For the first time since the wedding night began, she stepped forward on her own.

Victor's smile faded slightly.

"Katherine."

"You've always been intelligent."

"I hoped you'd understand."

"I understand perfectly."

She folded her arms around herself.

"You don't leave people alone."

Victor sighed.

"No."

"I don't."

Caleb stared at Katherine.

"You know him well."

She nodded slowly.

"Unfortunately."

Grace looked between them.

"Katherine..."

"Who is this man?"

She hesitated.

Then answered quietly.

"He worked for my uncle."

"What uncle?"

"My mother's older brother."

"I thought your mother was an only child."

Katherine closed her eyes.

"That's what she wanted everyone to believe."

Victor interrupted gently.

"May I come inside?"

"No."

Grace answered immediately.

"We're speaking perfectly well right here."

Victor nodded.

"As you wish."

He opened his briefcase.

Every person in the hallway stiffened.

Instead of removing a weapon...

He withdrew a thick manila folder.

Then held it toward the doorway.

"These belong to Katherine."

She didn't move.

"What are they?"

"Proof."

"Proof of what?"

Victor looked directly at Caleb.

"The truth."

Caleb stepped forward.

"What truth?"

Victor studied him carefully.

"So..."

"You're Caleb Holloway."

"I am."

Victor gave a small nod.

"I've wanted to meet you."

Caleb frowned.

"Why?"

"Because Beatrice talked about you often."

The name changed the atmosphere instantly.

Grace noticed it.

So did Victor.

"I see."

He smiled faintly.

"She never told you everything."

Katherine whispered,

"Stop."

Victor ignored her.

"I imagine she told you Beatrice disappeared."

Caleb's voice hardened.

"She did."

Victor tilted his head.

"Interesting."

"Because Beatrice wasn't missing."

Grace felt her heart race.

"We already know she left."

Victor looked genuinely surprised.

"So Katherine finally admitted that much."

Katherine stepped closer.

"Don't."

Victor continued as though she hadn't spoken.

"The real question isn't where Beatrice went."

He looked directly at Caleb.

"It's why she ran."

Nobody spoke.

Rain tapped softly against the front windows.

Finally Caleb asked,

"Why?"

Victor reached into the folder.

Removed an old newspaper clipping.

Placed it against the glass for everyone to see.

The headline read:

LOCAL UNIVERSITY STUDENT DIES IN HIT-AND-RUN INVESTIGATION

Caleb frowned.

"What does that have to do with Beatrice?"

Victor looked at Katherine.

"You haven't told him?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"I wanted him to hear it from me."

Victor's expression became unreadable.

"Very well."

He slowly folded the newspaper.

"The student who died..."

"...was Beatrice's younger brother."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Caleb looked stunned.

"You told me she was an only child."

Katherine whispered,

"I believed she was."

Victor nodded.

"Most people did."

Grace looked confused.

"Why would anyone hide a child?"

Victor answered quietly.

"Because someone was responsible for his death."

Caleb's hands clenched.

"What are you saying?"

Victor met his eyes.

"I'm saying Beatrice spent months searching for the driver."

"And just before she vanished..."

"...she found a name."

The air seemed to leave the room.

Grace could hear only the ticking of the grandfather clock behind her.

Caleb's voice was barely audible.

"Whose name?"

Victor slowly turned toward Katherine.

His answer came almost as a whisper.

"The Ellis family."

Katherine's face went completely white.

"No..."

She breathed.

"That's impossible."

Victor looked at her sadly.

"I wish it were."

Then he reached back into his briefcase.

This time, he removed a sealed envelope.

Across the front, written in elegant blue ink, were five simple words.

To Caleb — If I'm Gone.

Caleb stared at the handwriting.

He recognized it instantly.

It was Beatrice's.

The room remained perfectly still as Victor held out the envelope.

"This," he said quietly, "is the second page you've been searching for."

Grace watched her son's hands begin to shake.

For three years, he had believed that page was lost forever.

Now it was only inches away.

May you like

None of them realized...

Opening that envelope would expose a truth far more devastating than any of them were prepared to face.
