Chapter 4 - The True Heir

The Robertson estate in Bedford, New York, was a sanctuary of rolling hills, ancient oak trees, and high-security stone walls. For the past forty-eight hours, Hailey had been resting in the master suite of the main mansion, surrounded by the best medical care money could buy.
Dr. Chen had adjusted her post-surgical pain management, ensured her incision was healing properly, and checked Toby’s vitals. The baby was thriving, his cheeks flushing with a healthy, warm pink as he slept in a custom-carved cherry wood crib that had once belonged to Hailey when she was a baby.
Hailey sat by the roaring fireplace, wrapped in a soft silk robe, sipping a cup of warm chamomile tea.
The door opened quietly, and Finnley Robertson walked in.
He had discarded his "contractor" flannel for a simple, elegant navy cashmere sweater, but his presence was commanding. He was a man who had built an empire from nothing, a man who had negotiated with presidents and prime ministers. Yet, as he looked at his daughter and his newborn grandson, his eyes softened with a deep, protective warmth.
"How are you feeling, sweetheart?" Finnley asked, pulling up a chair beside her.
"Better, Dad," Hailey said, giving him a genuine smile. "The pain is mostly gone. Dr. Chen says I can start light walking tomorrow."
"Good," Finnley said, reaching over to gently squeeze her hand. "Because you have a very important meeting on Monday."
Hailey raised an eyebrow. "A meeting? Dad, I just had a baby."
"I know," Finnley said, his voice dropping into a low, serious tone. "But Jasper is currently desperately trying to find a way to save his company. He’s been calling every contact he has, begging for a meeting with the investors of the shell fund that backed him. He doesn't know that the shell fund, Vanguard Horizon Holdings, is owned entirely by you."
Hailey’s eyes widened. "By me?"
"I set it up in your name when you turned twenty-one," Finnley explained. "I wanted you to have your own independent investment vehicle. When Jasper was looking for seed money two years ago, your fund was the one that backed him. He thought he had impressed a group of anonymous New York venture capitalists. In reality, Hailey, you have owned fifty-one percent of his company since the day it was incorporated."
A slow, cold smile spread across Hailey’s face. All those nights she had spent listening to Jasper brag about his "brilliant business mind," all those times Gillian had told her she was a financial parasite who brought nothing to the marriage...
She had owned them all along.
"He’s desperate, Hailey," Finnley continued. "He’s scheduled a meeting at the Waldorf Astoria on Monday morning with the board of Vanguard Horizon, begging for a restructuring of the debt to keep his company from going bankrupt. He thinks he’s meeting with a board of anonymous directors."
"I want to go," Hailey said, her voice filled with a quiet, lethal determination.
"Are you sure, Hailey?" her father asked, his eyes searching hers. "You don't have to face him. I can have Marcus handle it. I can crush him with one phone call."
May you like
"No," Hailey said, standing up and looking out the window at the sprawling gardens. "He left me on a curb, Dad. He let his mother and sister treat me like dirt. He made me feel small for two years. I want to see his face when he realizes that the 'modest contractor’s daughter' he abandoned owns every single brick of the empire he tried to build."
Finnley stood up beside her, placing a proud hand on her shoulder. "That’s my girl. I’ll have the security team prepare the convoy. And Hailey... wear something expensive."
