Chapter 5 - The Trial of Blood and Devotion

The retaliation was swift and merciless.
Two nights later, the Marchetti estate was plunged into darkness. The backup generators were sabotaged, and the sound of heavy gunfire shattered the midnight silence.
Noelle bolted upright in bed. Her heart hammered against her ribs. Before she could even reach the door, Damian burst into her room, his face illuminated by the flashes of gunfire from outside. He was wearing tactical gear, holding an assault rifle.
"They breached the outer gates," Damian said, his voice tight with urgency. "It’s Silvio’s men. They aren't here to negotiate. They want the children dead so there is no proof of the fraud, and they want me gone."
"Where are the babies?" Noelle panicked, her voice rising.
"Reyes has them in the panic room," Damian said, grabbing her hand. His grip was tight, warm, and desperate. "We have to go. Now."
They sprinted down the dark, echoing hallways of the mansion. The sound of shattering glass and shouting filled the air. Suddenly, two masked gunmen emerged from the stairwell, raising their weapons.
Damian pushed Noelle behind him, firing three rapid shots. Both men fell, but a stray bullet grazed Damian’s shoulder. He groaned, stumbling back against the wall.
"Damian!" Noelle cried, catching him.
"I’m fine," he hissed through clenched teeth, though blood was already soaking through his sleeve. "Keep moving!"
They reached the hidden door of the panic room in the basement. Reyes opened it from the inside, pulling them both into the reinforced steel bunker. Inside, the three babies were crying, terrified by the noise and the darkness.
Noelle immediately ran to them, gathering all three into her arms, shushing them, rocking them, whispering her secret lullaby. Slowly, their cries subsided into whimpers.
"They cut our communications," Reyes said, patching up Damian’s shoulder. "We’re outnumbered, Boss. Silvio brought his entire mercenary crew. They are trying to blow the panic room doors."
A muffled boom vibrated through the thick steel walls, making the lights flicker.
Damian looked at Noelle. She was holding their children, her eyes wide with fear but her body completely covering them, ready to take a bullet for them. He realized then, with absolute certainty, that he loved her. Not just because she was the mother of his children, but because of her fierce, beautiful, unbreakable soul.
"Reyes," Damian said, his voice deadly quiet. "Open the secondary tunnel exit. Take Noelle and the kids through the sewer line to the docks. I’ll hold them off here."
"No!" Noelle screamed, standing up. "I’m not leaving you, Damian! We just found each other! We are a family!"
Damian walked over to her. He put his hands on her cheeks, his thumb wiping away her tears. "I have lived my whole life in the dark, Noelle. I thought my legacy was blood and ashes. But you and these babies... you are my light. I will die before I let them touch you. Go. I will meet you at the docks."
He leaned down and kissed her—a deep, desperate, passionate kiss that tasted of rain, blood, and promise.

"I love you, Noelle," he whispered against her lips. "Now go."
Before she could protest, Reyes pulled her toward the hidden tunnel door. With a final, agonizing look back at Damian, Noelle carried her children into the dark, wet tunnels, leaving the man she loved behind to face the demons of his past.
