Chapter 5 - Truths Revealed

Two days later, the atmosphere at Kingsbridge Memorial Hospital had completely changed. The media was in a frenzy outside, reporting on the shocking arrest of Chief of Pediatrics Dr. Robert Holt and the exposure of a massive child-trafficking and baby-swapping ring orchestrated by Victor Cole.
But inside the secure, private wing of the hospital, all was quiet.
Sandro’s real son, whom he had named Leo, was resting comfortably in a state-of-the-art incubator. Thanks to Nora’s quick thinking and Dr. Bianchi’s care, Leo’s oxygen levels had stabilized, and his jaundice was fading. He was going to make a full recovery.
In the room next door, Marcus and Elena Vance were holding their real son—the baby who had been used as a pawn, now fully recovered from his malnutrition after receiving the correct medical treatment.
Nora stood by Leo’s incubator, checking his vitals one last time before her shift ended. She felt a profound sense of peace. The nightmare was finally over.
"You look tired, Nurse Bellamy."
Nora smiled, turning to see Sandro walking into the room. He looked different today. He had shaved, his dark hair was neatly cut, and he wore a soft cashmere sweater instead of his usual intimidating suits. He looked like a father.
"It’s a good kind of tired," Nora said, stepping back to let him close. "He’s doing wonderfully, Sandro. His labs are perfect. You’ll be able to take him home in a few days."
Sandro stood beside her, looking down at his son. Leo was awake, his tiny hands waving in the air. Sandro reached in, and this time, he let Leo wrap his tiny fingers around his massive thumb. A soft, genuine smile broke across Sandro’s face—a smile that transformed him completely.
"I don't know how to thank you, Nora," Sandro said quietly. "If you hadn't questioned the blood type... if you hadn't noticed the ribbon... I would be mourning an empty grave, and my son would be... I don't even want to think about it."
"You don't have to thank me," Nora said softly. "I just did my job."
"No," Sandro said, turning to look at her. His dark eyes were intense, but there was a warmth in them that made her breath hitch. "You went above and beyond. You risked your life for my family. You are the bravest woman I have ever met."
Nora blushed, looking down. "I just wanted him to be safe."
"The hospital board wants to offer you the position of Head of Pediatrics," Sandro continued, a slight smirk playing on his lips. "I may have strongly suggested to them that if they didn't offer it to you, I would buy the hospital and fire everyone myself."
Nora laughed, a bright, clear sound. "You didn't have to do that, Sandro."
"I protect the people who protect mine," Sandro said, his tone turning serious. He stepped closer to her, the space between them shrinking. "But I was hoping... perhaps you wouldn't take the job."
Nora blinked, confused. "Why? It's a huge promotion."
"Because," Sandro said, his voice dropping to a soft, intimate whisper, "I want to hire you myself. Not as a nurse. But I want you to come with us. Leo needs a mother, Nora. He already knows your voice. He already knows your touch. And... I think I need you too."
Nora’s heart skipped a beat. She looked from Sandro’s hopeful, handsome face to the tiny baby in the incubator. In the midst of all the chaos, the danger, and the lies, she had found a strange, beautiful connection to this man and his child.
"Is this a professional offer, Mr. Moretti?" she asked, a playful smile on her lips.
Sandro smiled, reaching out to gently cup her cheek. His hand was warm, his touch incredibly gentle.
"No, Nora," Sandro whispered. "It’s a personal one. Let me show you a life where you are cherished, protected, and loved. Let us build a family. Together."

Nora felt a tear of happiness slip down her cheek. She placed her hand over his.
"I would love that, Sandro," she whispered.
