Chapter 6 - A Real Family

Six months later, the Romano estate was bathed in the warm, golden light of a Chicago summer.

The heavy iron gates were still there, and the security team still patrolled the perimeter, but the atmosphere inside the fortress had completely transformed. The gardens were filled with colorful flowers, and the grand foyer, once a cold monument to wealth, now featured a massive framed drawing on the wall—a picture of a big, happy family drawn in bright, mac-and-cheese orange crayon.

Beatrice sat on a wooden swing in the backyard, her bare feet brushing the grass. She was wearing a simple, comfortable sundress, her soft curves glowing in the sunlight.

From the lawn, the sound of laughter echoed.

"Look, Dad! Look how high I can jump!"

Leo, now a healthy, energetic six-year-old, ran across the grass, jumping over a small garden hose. His voice was bright, clear, and filled with joy. He had not stopped talking since the night of the gala.

Dominic stood near the patio, watching his son with a proud, relaxed smile. The dark, dangerous edge he had always carried was still there—he was still the boss of the city—but when he looked at his family, the ice melted entirely.

He walked over to the swing, stepping behind Beatrice. He placed his large, warm hands on her shoulders, leaning down to press a soft kiss to her temple.

"You're thinking too loud, my love," Dominic murmured, his deep voice sending a familiar, pleasant shiver down her spine.

Beatrice smiled, leaning her head back against his chest. "I’m just thinking about how much has changed. If you had told me a year ago that I’d be living in a mansion, engaged to a mafia boss, with a son who won't stop talking about dinosaurs, I would have told you to go to a mental asylum."

Dominic chuckled, a low, rumbling sound that vibrated against her back. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box, slipping it onto her lap.

Beatrice opened it. Inside sat a stunning, flawless emerald ring, surrounded by small, delicate diamonds.

"It’s beautiful, Dominic," she whispered, her eyes tearing up.

"It belonged to my grandmother," Dominic said, stepping around the swing to kneel in front of her. He took her hand, his dark eyes looking up at her with an intensity that still made her breath catch. "She was a woman of strength, warmth, and courage. Just like you. You didn't just save my son's life, Beatrice. You saved mine. You brought the light back into this house."

He slipped the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly.

"I love you, Beatrice Miller," Dominic said, his voice raw and filled with a devotion that half the city would never believe a man like him could possess. "Will you do me the honor of officially becoming a Romano?"

"Yes," Beatrice sobbed, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, a thousand times yes."

Leo ran over, throwing himself into their lap, laughing as he squeezed between them.

"Group hug!" the little boy yelled, wrapping his arms around both of them.

Dominic held them both close, his eyes meeting Beatrice's over their son’s head.

The world outside their gates was still dangerous, and there would always be battles to fight. But inside the Romano fortress, the silence was gone. The light had returned, and they were finally, truly, a family.
