Chapter 5 - The Triumph of Truth

The annual Boston Harbor Gala was the city's most prestigious event, and this year, the tension was palpable. The city council was scheduled to announce the winner of the harbor revitalization contract—a contract worth three billion dollars.
Richard Vance stood in the center of the glittering ballroom, surrounded by politicians, journalists, and developers. He looked smug, confident that his media campaign had successfully tainted Marcus Blackwood’s reputation.
When the heavy doors of the ballroom opened, a hush fell over the crowd.
Marcus Blackwood entered, wearing a flawless black tuxedo. But he wasn't alone. On his arm was Grace Mitchell.
She looked absolutely stunning in an elegant, high-necked emerald green silk gown. Her hair was styled in soft, classic waves, and she carried herself with a quiet, regal dignity that made the wealthy socialites in the room look cheap by comparison.
Richard Vance’s smile faltered. He stepped forward, his eyes narrowing as he blocked their path.
"Marcus," Richard sneered, his voice loud enough to attract the surrounding reporters. "I see you brought your... charity case to the gala. Tell me, is this the new face of Blackwood Industries? A waitress from Southie?"
The reporters closed in, their cameras flashing rapidly.
Grace did not flinch. She stepped forward, looking directly into Richard’s eyes. "My name is Grace Mitchell, Mr. Vance. I am the Director of the Blackwood Foundation’s Food Security Initiative. And unlike you, I don't need to buy people’s integrity to prove my worth."
"What are you talking about, girl?" Richard hissed, his face turning red.
Marcus pulled a small, silver flash drive from his pocket and handed it directly to the head of the city council, who was standing nearby. "On this drive," Marcus announced, his voice carrying an absolute, booming authority that silenced the entire ballroom, "is a recorded conversation between Mr. Vance and Silas Thorne. It details an illegal conspiracy to evict tenants from South Boston properties to clear land for Vance Global's development bid, as well as a recorded attempt to bribe Ms. Mitchell with ten thousand dollars to fabricate a statement against me."
The crowd gasped.
Richard’s assistant tried to pull him away, but it was too late. Two federal investigators, who had been waiting in the lobby, stepped into the ballroom, flashing their badges.
"Richard Vance," the lead investigator said. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, attempted bribery, and housing fraud. Please come with us."
As Richard was led out of the ballroom in handcuffs, his screams of rage were drowned out by the murmur of the crowd.
The head of the city council stepped up to the microphone. "After reviewing the evidence and considering the values of our community, the city of Boston is proud to award the harbor revitalization contract to Blackwood Industries."

The room erupted into loud, thunderous applause. Marcus turned to Grace, his eyes shining with a deep, quiet triumph. "We did it," he whispered.
"No," Grace smiled, her hand resting over his heart. "You did it, Marcus."
